Before a child can feel confident exploring their new environment, they need to feel safe, comfortable and connected.
Our kaiako spend time getting to know each child — what makes them laugh, what helps them feel calm, what they're interested in and the little routines that make their day feel familiar.
Building those relationships is an important part of creating a sense of belonging.
Visiting your centre before your child's first full day can help make the transition feel much less daunting.
It gives tamariki a chance to explore the environment with someone they trust nearby, meet their kaiako and begin recognising the people and places that will soon become part of their everyday world.
Bringing something familiar from home can help too. A favourite comforter, toy or even a familiar goodbye routine can provide reassurance while everything else feels new.
A few tears at drop-off are completely normal.
Keeping your goodbye warm, confident and consistent can help your child understand what's happening and learn that you'll always come back.
And once you've left? There's often a fascinating activity, friendly face or very important sandpit project waiting to provide a distraction.
You know your child better than anyone.
That's why communication between whānau and our kaiako is such an important part of settling in. Sharing information about sleep, routines, interests and what's happening at home helps us understand how best to support your child.
Over time, the unfamiliar becomes familiar.
New faces become trusted kaiako. Other children become friends. And that once-new centre begins to feel like another place where your little one belongs.
