Running, climbing, balancing, jumping and digging all help tamariki develop their physical confidence.
These big movements support strength, coordination and balance, while smaller activities — like collecting leaves, pouring water or making mud creations — help develop fine motor skills too.
Most importantly, children get to challenge themselves.
Reaching the next step, climbing a little higher or finally balancing across something tricky can create a wonderful sense of achievement.
We want children to feel confident trying new things.

Sometimes they'll succeed immediately.
Sometimes they'll need another go.
Both are valuable.
Mud washes off. Clothes can be cleaned.
But the experiences children have while they're busy digging, splashing, creating and exploring are much harder to replace.
Messy play encourages curiosity and creativity without needing a perfect end result. It's about experimenting, discovering and enjoying the process.
So if your little one occasionally arrives home looking like they've spent the afternoon excavating an archaeological site, there's probably been some pretty serious learning happening.
